It is really hard to slow down in running. It is competition after all and even during the training no one wants to be defeated. But this year I was forced to throw away my pride and learn myself how to run at a slow pace.
The ninth day was the last and one of the toughest. I nearly froze in Jeseníky mountains and flew over my handlebars. My landing was for zero points.
The eighth day was one of the best in the race. It was nice to have some rest before the second checkpoint. I was told that the Czech part is harder than the Slovak one, but I have to say that the roads there were much easier.
Finally, I left Slovakia. I can’t say it was ugly, but they pay by euros, on their signs is some weird font and home is home. I didn’t know that time that I will taste ambience of the music festival.
I planned an easy ride for the sixth day. I didn’t want to look devastated at the first checkpoint. But the track was more complicated than I expected … as always.
Day five was the longest of them all. The weather made fun of me. When I was packing my equipment before the race I didn’t think about winter and this was a revenge.
I got used to living on the bike during the fourth day. But not even a single kilometre was easy. I had a lot of problems with weather. After three days of non-human heat the rain came.
On the third day I started having problems with my bike. For one moment I even thought about giving up. Fortunately, there was a lot of cycle services in Slovakia.
The next day was much harder. It was a little more hilly, the terrain was rougher and the temperature was above forty degrees. I made 120 kilometres in spite of these unpleasant conditions. But at the end of the day, I was nearly dead.
1000 Miles Adventure is a 1600 kilometres long race for bikes, feet or kickbikes through Slovak and Czech mountains. Everyone is on their own – you have to carry your own food and drinks, find a place to rest and sleep. Racers have to follow a GPS path and have to hand all tracked data to the organisers at the end of the race, so they can check that they didn’t cheat. And this is my story of how I struggled on the road and faced a lot of challenges and dangers.
